Get Slope-Ready and Avoid Injury this skiing season

As the skiing season approaches, it’s time to think not just about snow, but also injury prevention and smart recovery. My name is Cameron, and I am the newest Physiotherapy Resident here at Step Forward Physiotherapy! I have been an avid skier since I was 4, taught ski lessons for 4 years, and am very excited to help you recover from skiing injuries an get you back to what you love – safely and stronger than before!

Here are some of the most common ski injuries:

    ACL Tear
  • The classic skier knee injury that happens when your ski twists and your knee feels hyper stretched. Usually it involves a pop, swelling, and instability.

  • MCL Sprain
  • A stretch or tear to the ligament of the inner knee that usually happens when your knee bends inwards. Can often heal without surgery but proper rehab = better long-term results.

  • Meniscus Tear
  • Cartilage in your knee gets pinched or twisted. It can commonly cause pain, clicking, and stiffness.

  • Shoulder Injuries
  • Dislocations and rotator cuff strains can be caused by falls. Weakness, pain, and limited movement are common signs.

  • Wrist Injuries
  • Landing on your hands can lead to sprain or fractures, and early rehab keeps you from losing more strength and mobility.

  • Skier’s Thumb
  • A torn ligament in the thumb that most often occurs when holding poles when you fall. Hurts to grip or move à rehab (and sometimes bracing) can help to heal properly.
